STAKEHOLDER UPDATE & IMPACT SURVEY: COVID-19

MARCH 13, 2020

The provincial and federal response to the global COVID-19 (Coronavirus) issue changes daily, even hourly. Tourism Kelowna is receiving frequent updates from our travel and public health partners and making necessary adjustments to our plans including shifting some of the timing and geographic markets of our marketing tactics. We will provide weekly updates, at minimum, throughout this issue and in the weeks and months following.

Request for your feedback (Stakeholder Survey)

Hearing from you, and specifically how this evolving issue is impacting you, is very important as we continue to refine our response plans.

Please complete this short, 3-minute survey by end of day on Monday, March 16, to help us understand the direct impact your business is facing. Please select one individual from your organization to complete this survey.

Impact on the travel and tourism industry

This week, with the World Health Organization (WHO) categorizing COVID-19 as a global pandemic, we know general travel will decline in the short term. It is important to note that Canada continues to be a safe travel destination; however, travel behaviours will change with more people looking for short-haul travel options. This aligns with Kelowna’s key travel markets as a vast majority of our visitors come from Western Canada.

With the Government of British Columbia advising against public events with more than 250 people attending, meetings and events will be impacted directly and significantly. While we adjust our plans and respond on behalf of our local tourism industry, our thoughts are with the event organizers, meeting planners, and local business operators who are also having to adjust and respond. Difficult decisions are being made by individuals, teams, and volunteers who have worked for months – even years – on bringing these events to our destination and we will support their decisions and assist as needed. Like you, we are disappointed; however, we share the understanding that public health is paramount and affects us all.

In addition to the survey, we invite you to connect directly with us with your questions and business updates. Our visitor experience team at the Kelowna Visitor Centre is a great resource and you can reach any Tourism Kelowna staff member directly with updates.

We are here for you and here with you,

Lisanne Ballantyne
President & CEO
